First of all Happy Easter Everyone!
I’m sure all of you have been getting lots of chocolate for Easter! x3 My favourite’s dark chocolate. They are awesome! Not only does it taste good, but it also helps produce endorphin which gives us a pleasurable feeling. They say it’s meant to be good for the heart too, helping it lower blood pressure and cholesterol. This is because cocoa contains flavanols which "which recruit the gas nitric oxide to the cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. Nitric oxide causes smooth muscles to relax, which may lower blood pressure." (Article here).
Since there’s more cocoa contained in dark chocolate compared to milk or white chocolate, that’s why it’s more effective. There are even studies claiming dark chocolate may actually contain more antioxidants compared to green tea.
Unfortunately, aside from all the positive points of dark chocolate, often chocolates also contain saturated fats and other ingredients that can outweigh its benefits.
At the same time, we really should watch out to what chocolate we are eating too. Apparently some Chocolate manufacturers have been using terms like "chocolate flavoured" and "chocolate product" on packaging. So the chocolate itself doesn’t contain any cocoa solids but only white compound chocolate, basically sugar and fat. I guess this is another reason why we should be reading the ingredients label when we're shopping. That's pretty wrong if you ask me, it's bad enough when people use terms like low fat or reduced sugar to make it seem like an healthier alternative. And now I actually have to make sure I'm not getting some kind of stupid "chocolate flavoured" chocolates too. what da heck?! Wonder if that's why some chocolate are so cheap...
